All of the posts here are very encouraging to me. My daughter is 14 and will be "trying" her 4th med in less than three years. I wonder if surgery is in her near future. I would love to chat with anyone willing to share their experiences and thoughts. Melanie - if you have time an email from you would be great as well.

I wish I'd joined this forum earlier—my son and I were at Cincinnati Children's in July. He is 11, and had his second surgery, j-pouch construction and rectum removal, on May 5. We live in Washington state, so we understand about being far from home! We were in the midwest almost 4 months for treatment. He too, had complications. His anastimosis tore AND they gave him a staph infection in his bladder from multiple catheter placements. We are still battling the bladder problems for now, but he has healed just fine from the surgery. His final ostomy takedown is scheduled for November. Wish we'd been able to meet someone else with the same problem!

I want to thank you for the perspective. I was diagnosed with UC a week ago. I've had problems for about 10 weeks now and I have been a whiny brat through most of it. Seeing that there are kids dealing with this and the thought that this could be my son (he's 10) instead of me has really made me look at it with fresh eyes. Yes, it's literally a pain to deal with and being stuck at home is not fun but I'd rather I deal with it than my kids. Again, thank you for the perspective!

My 14 year old son just had his surgery on July 8th at Cincinnati Children's. He developed an abscess and are still recovering from that in the hospital. They will run a test to check on his J-pouch tomorrow. We know this was the right decision. This is a huge surgery and will take time to recover, BUT living with a very active disease and it controlling his life wasn't an option. He is very discouraged right now. We are 7 hours away from home and been in the hospital for almost 3 weeks. Reading the posts from others who have gone through this helps so much as to what to expect.

Derik's Mom,
Me too....You however will see a huge differance after the surgeries are all done and will be so happy that you decided this route. Good luck to your son and the family and thank you.
