Surgery Consult tomorrow, what questions should I ask?

Mon, April 14, 2008 9:19 AM

I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow for a possible resection of the ilececal valve area (where my appendix ruptured last year and is just a big blob now, plus there is a stricture there).  I also may have a fistula or abscess going into my psoas muscle and iliac muscle.  I also have inflammation all over and in those muscles.

Please advise me of any questions I should be asking.  (My Crohns only is in the ileocecal valve area)

Thanks,

I saw the surgeon before reading your response.  I did not think to ask his percentages.  He did say he does not get repeats due to all the new drugs out there to prevent the return of Crohns.  He said I would be in the hospital 5-7 days and I am assuming off work for 2 months.  He talked about debriding the muscle(but using caution due to a nerve in that area)  (I have a fistula or abscess in my psoas muscle), putting in  some drains, and removing the entire area where my appendix ruptured last year at the ileocecal valve. (bowel resection) (It is a big blob, cemented in and a different surgeon chose not to remove last year when all they thought I had was a ruptured appendix)

He answered all the other questions, though.  I did ask my GI doctor what the surgeon's  infection rate is, to which there is no specific answer.  The general consensus at my job is he's the best one to see. (I'm a home health nurse and we see all the patients who end up with post op complications)  I am concerned about MRSA, to which my plan is to not see any MRSA patients over the next few weeks at work and to get out of the hospital as soon as I can by walking as much as possible and getting the bowel going again.

Thanks for your input!

1) How many of these types of surgeries have they done
2) What is there positive outcome rate / percent
3) What is the DR plan if there is complications if any and if there is a fistula, how is that treated and how does that effect the outcome?
4) Recovery time?
5) Are you on the right medications?
