Facing Surgery

Sat, August 21, 2010 8:17 AM

I was diagnosed with Crohns in 1988, I have been on alot of meds and actually Humara only for the last 3 years for my back, which in turn helped my disease like I could not believe. The last year I have had 3 abcesses due to a fistulae. I was in the hospital and they put in a drain tube via guided CT scan. Been on Flagyl and Cipro since the end of June. I am having surgery next week to resection the colon. Not looking forward to a possible 3 month temporary colstomy. I have had three previous c-sections in the 80's. I am soooo nervous. Would love to be able to hear from you with positive feedback, all I read on the internet are doom and gloom stories.

It sounds like you're in the early stages of getting beyond surgery.  I hope things are going well for you.  I had a setback to start and was re-admitted to the hospital for dehydration.  After that, though, I've only gotten better.  I'm just over two years past surgery.  I had my take-down and was put back together about four months later.  The main issue I faced for the first 15 months or so was dealt with with the Align probiotic.  I am at a loss for the name of what my issue was (maybe I blocked it out), but it led to me needing to go to the bathroom a lot like when I had UC.  The main difference was that I wasn't feeling sick and I looked good.  I just went a lot.  Anyway, since the probiotic, I've done nothing but get better.  My confidence is up.  The fears of being out and about and wondering if there was a bathroom close are fading.  I still go 6-10 times in a 24-hour period, but I can wait if i need to, which wasn't the case before.  My life before getting sick was good.  My life now is actually better.  Better because I can appreciate my good health and know where I was before.  Now I almost feel lucky to have been sick.  I'm 35 now and feel like I have a life ahead, and not only that, but one I will appreciate in a way I never could have before.

Almost like my own experience! I was on Cipro and Flagyl(why can't they coat that pill?!)

You'll be so glad not to have a drain anymore, I promise you that. The day before the surgery is what I call colon blow and that's the worst part. Discuss pain control options with your surgeon, prepare yourself the best you can.

Recovery is never easy but the sooner you can tolerate a regular diet the sooner you can go home. Walk around as much as you can after the surgery to get your bowels moving again, be prepared when you hear chief residents narrating your history outside the hall. The interns and residents are primarily in charge of checking in on you and changing bandages, so a group might want to ask you about your condition, etc(if you're going to a teaching hospital).

Never be afraid to speak up, remember the nurses and your surgeon care about your comfort and recovery. It's all about you!

Take books, magazines, computer maybe, and some music. Most hospitals have a music channel so you can tune into that.

You'll make it all right! Sending hugs
