Looking for others who have an S pouch

Thu, January 13, 2011 1:52 PM

I had a total colectomy in 1982 and received an experimental S pouch. Looking for others who may still have them to see how they are fairing after all these years. I hear there are not many of us still around.

Hello Wolverinefan! When I got my S pouch in 1982, it was an experimental surgery and the J pouch did not exist. The options I was given were an illeostomy, a koch pouch, or this experimental surgery. I was actually the 115th person to receive it. I'd be happy to discuss details with you if you want to contact via facebook or email. No reason to refer to yourself as "selfish"....what you find out may help someone else down the line

Hello!   I know this may sound super selfish so I must clarify ahead of time that I certainly DON'T mean it that way. I had a total abdominal colectomy in '95 with a J pouch. I'm just curious how you've faired with an S pouch? Not only am I a patient but I am a nurse, currently unemployed since last year due to some recent troubles with obstructions, but I totally forgot about the S pouch as an option. Obviously, it's called that due to it's shape, correct? Do you know if in the 80's when you had your surgery done if they only did S pouches then or was there a J pouch but they went by "certain criteria?" When I mentioned previously I didn't want to come across sounding selfish it's because I am interested in learning all there is about the different surgeries out there and why some of us had different ones done. I just don't have much to offer in return, well nothing in return when it comes to the S pouch. Now if you asked me about the J, I could help you out there as I've lived with mine for going on 16 yrs. now. My youngest daughter, she just turned 9, has been dx with IBS, scary & sad! I have been a part of CCFA since it's inception for their education and have loved watching them continue to grow & serve our population. I've also appreciated the recent webinars/conference calls to learn more about new topics they're constantly doing research on. Now I am glad not only for myself that I've stayed educated, but also now with my little one seeming to have my similar DNA! :(    Have a blessed day.
