skin irritation under colostomy pouch and irritation of skin around stoma

Tue, May 24, 2011 5:37 PM

My husband had a colostomy on April 27,2011.  He has  since developed skin irritation under the pouch  and around the skin by the  stoma.  WhY? And what can we do to ease the discomfort?

I had the same thing... you have to cut the ostomy bag hole much larger and give the stoma a wide berth.  I developed little soars around my stoma that the doctor had to treat with silver nitrate sticks to cauterize.  Very painful...

You can try using some stomahesive powder- dust off excess and top with Cavalon No sting barrier to create a seal. If you have any skin barrier at home (coloplast or Hollihesive) you can try cutting a "washer" out of the barrier and applying that next. That will give skin an extra layer of protection. Really need to know if this rash is related to product, pouching issues or fungal rash or other things. If its a fungal rash you will need a script for miconazole or nystantin powder. Also make sure when you remove the pouch you are using a remover and not just pulling the pouch off ( i have had patients do this and create ulcers) After bathing, showering make sure the tape collar around the pouch gets dried . Hope that helps until he can get seen.

Possible causes of skin irritation could be related to pouch leaking or "undermining", dermatitis , fungal rash etc. He really needs to be seen by your local enterstomal therapist. You can go to the WOCN website and find a certified ostomy nurse in your area if you do not know of one. Things that start out as "rashes" and are not treated properly-promptly can create other problems such as problems with pouch seal, leakage, ulcerations. Skin issues are very hard to treat without the visual..I would definately have him seen.
