Joint stiffness and slow walking post surgery

Sun, August 21, 2011 10:04 AM

I am a married 64 yr old male. The two years from my first UC attack until the illiostomy were horrible. I could not work, lost 60 pounds, had numerous painful flare-ups (I only had about a 3 mo period during those two years when I was not in full flare-up mode). the drugs made my hair brittle and fall out and my skin became paper-thin and bruised easily.

I have no regrets about having the surgery after trying all other reasonable treatment options. At age 64, I only wanted to undergo one surgery.  The surgery was 10 weeks ago. I was in the hospital for one week. I went through the post-surgery healing process without any problems and I have now been released from care. Even though I am now drug free I am still having some problems and I am wordering if those of you who have already undergone surgery can give me some advice and guidance.

I have not been able to return to my normal sex life. i never had problems before surgery, but now "willie" just does not want to rise to the occassion.

I am only able to walk slowly and my joints are stiff and hurt after walking.

I am concerned about these problems. My wife and I are going on a cruise next week (11 weeks post surgery) to celebrate my recovery, and I had hoped to enjoy a full sex life with a lot of walking in ports.

After my surgery, the more I walked the better I felt, and the easier everything was. But I was definitely feeling back to normal after just a couple of weeks.  Have you had follow up appointments with all of your doctors yet?  It might be a good idea to get their input on it.

I hope you're able to enjoy your cruise! Good luck and take care.
