Colonoscopy after surgery

Sat, September 17, 2011 10:10 AM

Does anyone know what the norm is for having a colonoscopy after having a small bowel resection for Crohn's? Changed doctor due to a move. It has  been a year since surgery. No symptoms, and blood work all normal. We went from pediatric GI to adult.

I had a small bowl resection and strictureplasty in July. The section of my ilieum removed was pretty minimal thanks to Remicade. My doctor recommended having my next colonoscopy/upper endoscopy (or double dip as I'm told the nurses call it) in March of next year. Unfortunately, 6-MP caused other problems so I just had my 4th procedure of the year.

Not sure what you mean by norm. I had an extensive resection decades ago and am able to live a good life. My current doctor, American Board Certified in Gastronenterology and Internal Med, is significant to this. He does an annual colonoscopy. I watch what foods I eat, my attitude stays positive, laugh often, and spot the location of restrooms whenever I go out :). Respect this disease. Crohn's is incurable. Keep reading current info. IBD Self-Management by Sunanda V. Kane, MD, MSPH, 2010, is an easy to read book with good info. The Foreword is written by CCFA's own V.P. Patient & Professional Services.

Life is awesome. Do enjoy it. Aloha -

If you go to www.ostomy.org there are some people who might be able to answer your question.  Even if you didn't have an ostomy when you had your resection, you end up with pretty much the same thing as someone who's had an ostomy takedown. Just be careful, bc a lot of ppl have had a j-pouch surg done, and if you still have part of your colon, its probably different.
