Incontinence after j pouch reversal

Sat, November 19, 2011 12:51 PM

It's 5 days since my illiostomy reversal & the stool is getting firmer, but I have a hard time holding it in.  Any suggestions?  Is this normal?

It is normal.  I am now 3 years with a j pouch and I have complete continence unless I am drunk, very sick, or in the hospital on pain meds.  LOL

When I first started to use my pouch I had incontinence a lot, especially at night.  Your body will adjust and it will get better.

yes, this is normal. Since your colon has been removed your small bowel is now trying to take over that function. Usually about 45  minutes after eating you will probably get the urge to go to the bathroom. Practive  holding your bowel movement for as long as you can and increase the length of time (5min-10min etc) It can  take  anywhere from 3 months to a year to adjust.
