recovery/running after jpouch surgery?

Mon, January 02, 2012 4:07 PM

Hey everyone!
So after 3 years of every medication I think I am going to opt for jpouch surgery. I meet with my doctor this week to make the plans and go over everything but I have a few questions.

I love running. Actually fell in love with it after I was diagnosed to lose weight from prednsione. I have run 2 half marathons and was going to be training for a full this year.

My question is after surgery how long till you were up and about? I know moving as soon as I can is good just to keep me active. I really want not lose a lot of time off from training (no I will not push myself too hard just to be able to race again-I will not hurt myself more just for a trophey-even if they are so pretty haha)

I just kinda want a time line of things to expect. Where you walking on your own after a week? two weeks? three weeks? Please dont say three weeks! I need hope that I can do this.

Hopefully surgery will be in the next week or so. Any advice or comments are welcomed and so helpful! Also is there anything you wish you had in the hospital that would have made you more comfortable? I will be bring my own toilet paper. Learned that lesson on my own.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope everyone has a HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

i just turned 37 and i had my first surgery july 8th 2010 and then had the reversal on oct 20th 2010. it was a rough road at first i had lost around fifty pounds in 2 weeks of muscle.
i am very gratful that i had the surgery. i have put my wieght back on an d have built my muscle back. it took about a year get get back up and going full time. those first three months after july were hard but by then i was playing golf again not all 18 holes but till i got worn out. every one kept telling me it would get bettter and you got tired of hearing it but it does. it sounds like you are active and so am i so slowing down in the begining was very hard to do. just relize this is a major surgery and you wont jump back up in a week. for me surgery is the best thing i ever did i only take lomitil to slow bms down and only have about 6 a day and sleep thru the night 7 to 9 hours with out having to get up close to 6 nights a week.
i am now able to eat a meal the same day when i go out to play hockey, golf trail riding on atvs or my jeep. i no longer take toilet paper with me in my car ,4wheeler,golf bag and so on. i would defintly find a support group in your area if there is one. they will have a understanding that you wont find anywhere else. i got some great pointers from all of them that have helped me greatly. i wish you well and send my prayers
