Dr. Suggested Resection.

Wed, March 21, 2012 2:13 PM

Hey,

I have had Crohn's since '09.  I haven't really had relief from the disease.  The Dr. said that since I am on Cimzia and Entocort, and my small bowel only appears to be getting worse, that he recommends the surgery.  I have not tried Remicade, but the Dr. said it was the same drug as Cimzia just delivered differently and he didn't think it would do anything.  <- I was wondering if that was true?
Also, he said that it could send me into a remission (having the resection).  Is that true?  I have gotten use to being in pain all the time, it would be nice to just not have any.
I'm a little scared, I've never had surgery before.  They want to remove some of my ilium (including terminal ilium). Looking for support/insight from those who have had this done, or had similar experience.

Thank you,
Jennie

Thank you all. I'm a lot less nervous about the surgery now and am hoping to at least be symptom free until I can finish school. I was wondering if I will have a temporary stoma bag. My GI didn't say anything about it but my PCM did. So I am unsure of what to expect on that aspect of it.

I had resection and stricturplasty surgery on on my ileum in June of 2010 after trying medication for 5 months and 2 different doctors. The surgery wasn't bad and I spent 8 days in the hospital before spending another month at home recovering. I was pretty sick prior to surgery which is why my recovery took so long. The recovery isn't easy but definitely better than continuing to live in pain. Good luck!

Don't be too worried about the surgery. I had my ileum resected in 2006, and the disease has not come back since then. I did, however, have disease in another spot at that time but it was very mild so no surgery was done for it. that spot got worse 2 years later and required surgery, but the disease in my ileum has been in remission since 06.

if you only have disease in that one spot i think surgery will be pretty easy. when i had my resection the pain from the surgery was less than the pain i had prior from the crohn's disease. the pain should be even easier to deal with if it is done laproscopically as well. really, for me it was only like 2 weeks and i was up and back to school pain free.

Hi Jennie,

The doctor is right that Remicade is similar to Cimzia.  When I was diagnosed, we tried remicade and within a week the doctor knew I needed surgery because I did not have any relief.  I had a resection 2 years ago.  Honestly, I don't regret it at all and it was my first surgery.  For the most part, I have relief but am still on 6MP and Cimzia because of my symptoms.  I believe I am one of the rare cases that has to continue with this after surgery.  The one draw back to the surgery is the scar tissue (that's with any surgery though).  I've found that there are some nerve endings that are firing off pain. I've had to go to a pain management doctor to get some relief.  I feel, after two years, that I am finally on the road to recovery!  I hope this helps you!
