Small Bowel Resection

Thu, May 31, 2012 3:45 PM

I am 23 and was diagnosed with Crohns in Aug. of 2011 but have been seeing doctors for my condition since 2001.  I recently developed an abscess on the right of my abdomen and have been put on antibiotics and a drain.

The area of inflammation associated with my Crohns is located in my small intestine which is where my abscess occured externally from the small intestine.  I am told there is a good possibility that I developed a hole in my small intestine that caused the abscess and I require a small bowel resection in order to correct the hole.

Is surgery the only option in my case?  Surgery is a big step and I'm told its possible the abscess will occur again even after surgery.  More complications may arise from surgery.

Has anyone on this board had this surgery before and was it successful?  What is the likely-hood the hole will repair itself and has it in anyone elses case?

I'm deeply worried about going into surgery and appreciate the help!

Thanks

I have had an abscess exactly like what you are talking about twice. The first time antibiotics fixed the issue and then I went on Remicade and was fine for a few years.

Last month I found out that I had three strictures in my small bowel that I would surgery for. While waiting for surgery, I developed a partial blockage, and then went to the ER due to severe pain. I found out that I again had formed an abscess due to the inflammation leaking out of my intestine. Initially they tried to drain it but the infection would not go away. I ended up having the resectioning surgery. I feel much better after surgery and am hoping the feeling continues.

Whether or not you need surgery will depend on how bad the abscess is and whether it responds to other treatments. Surgery is scary, but so far the benefit was worth it.  My Mom and both my siblings all have Crohns and had the same surgery and everyone has been doing great and remained Crohns free.

Good Luck to you and I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry to hear sad. I am a little confused. Do you mean that they are going to try to just repair the absess. Take it out and sew up where it was connected to the intestine? If they do an actual bowel resection, it will not be the same absess that reoccurs if you get another absess in the future. Sorry, just the way you phrased it was a bit confusing. If you could clarify that would be great. But either way, you will do fine! We're always here for answers to questions and advice or just to talk. smiley
