Complications during surgery

Mon, December 31, 2012 4:21 PM

My husband was rushed to the hospital on September 26, 2012.  He was in so much pain he was unable to move.  They did a CT Scan at the hospital and found he had blockage in his intestines.  He was diagnosed with Crohns in 2001, and up until the last 2 years it had been manageable.  Over the last 2 years he has lost approx 50-60 pounds, and the pain has been uncontrollable.  The doctor explainedd if he did not remove the blockage Brian would not make it much longer.  The doctor explained when he opened my husband, Brian, up his small intestine was the size of a softball.  He removed the blockage and everything seemed fine.  2 days later, the night nurse noticed something appearing to be bowl filling Brians drain tubes.  Brian was rushed back into surgery.  The surgeon found that Brians large intestine had broken open after the 1st surgery.  The staples holding it closed had completely broke open.  At this point Brian was in full blow septic shock.  The doctors sedated Brian, put him on a breathing tube, and he was transferred to the ICU.  His likelihood of survival was very low.  By the grace of god Brian pulled through, and while he is still battling for his life each and every day, he beat septic shock.  There is much more to his story and you can read about it at http://www.facebook.com/PrayersForBrian.  Very hard to type everything he has been through.  As of today he is still in the hospital.  God Bless you all.

Septic shock from a ruptured bowel is the nightmare we all fear.  I'm happy you made it through the critical timeframe and got immediate help.  Best of luck to you with recovery in the new year.
