Second surgery (ileosotomy reversal)

Thu, January 24, 2013 3:24 PM

Hi all,

I am seven weeks post-op and I am getting ready for my second surgery. I wanted to know if the second surgery is as bad as the first one. I had a lot of pain and develop abscess. I want to know what to expect with my reversal. Will the surgery be as painful as the first? How long did it took for the j-pouch to work? I feel very anxious and nervous at the same time. Any input will be greatly appreciated. FYI, I have been feeling a lot better after my colon take-down. I hope to feel just as good with my reversal.

Unfortunately I'm having a hard time.  Although the surgery and recovery went well, I have severe diarrhea (about 20 BMs a day).  I've tried all kinds of diets, but none help.  I eat bland, low fiber foods.  And I eat several small meals through out the day.  I'll probably go back to the bag if I don't improve in about 6 months or so.  Sorry you aren't doing better.

HI,
I had j-pouch surgery & have lost about 10 Ibs after surgery in a few months. I'm having a hard time gaining back weight. When I try new foods I feel either bloated or get diarrhea. What kind of diet are you on after surgery?

Thanks!

Hi,
Thank your for your response. I really hope that the second surgery goes a lot smoother than the first! I really do not want to go through what I went through with the first.

Wow!  Seven weeks and you're getting ready for your second surgery?  That's great.  I had to wait 6 months.  The second surgery was easier to recover from, physically.  My hospital stay was only 3 days, and I was back to work in about 6 weeks.  I had a much harder time recovering from the first surgery (8 days in the hospital and 8-10 weeks off work).  I had my first bowel movement about 5 hours after eating my first meal.  BMs feel different than you remember, though.  You'll have to learn the new signals your body will give you.  Also, it's normal to have lots of BMs at first.  Good luck with your surgery!
