Colon Resection A Success

Colonoscopy was effective in snaring and removing my colon polyps until in 2010, when a large polyp presented requiring surgical removal. I was over 80 at the time and had never had surgery, Since all polyps in the colon are considered pre-cancerous, I knew the surgery was absolutely necessary but was understandably anxious and dreading it. I checked with others, They said this type of operation was reputed to usually be followed by a good recovery.

Half of my colon and my appendix were removed. My post operative reaction required a two week hospital stay. There was pain.

I was weak and depressed, refusing to eat and frustrated by being unable to get food that conformed to the SCD diet I have followed for thirteen years
It has helped me to manage IBS. I had constant diarrhea.

Once home, and with a skilled caregiver, I made excellent progress.
The projected recovery period was six to eight weeks. By the third week I was able to dispense with my helper and do routine tasks.
Now, two years later, it is as if it never happened and I am as active as before surgery, with a bonus of more bowel regularity than before,

The main memory is some scar tissue at the navel as the surgery was laperoscopic.

I do Pilates exercise three times a week, climb stairs, walk and swim. I will require another scope next year.

I still have IBS which is well controlled as long as I stick to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I am very pleased with it and have no problem with the restrictions.
