Crohns and skin conditions

My son is 12, diagnosed 2 years ago with crohns, briefly in remission but had a rough winter. He got what we thought was a bug bite on his leg but it spread, looked like spider bites, and was hot and infected looking like staph. We saw his pediatrician, an allergist, and his gastro doctor, and they all agreed it was erythema nodosum caused by the crohns. He suffered with that for 3 months. Has anyone else had this?

I have been living with Crohn,s for about 18 yrs, I am now in my 40's, I believe I acquired the disease a bit later than most. Doctors think it was the birth of my one and only wonderful child that triggered the disease.But I have noticed probably over the last 4 years my skin breaking out in this nasty looking rash with some blistering, sometimes on my arms sometimes on my legs. I have just recently went to the dermatologist and they said they believed it to be erythema nodosum. The only thing is, I only notice these when I am out in the heat of the sun for a period of time. I have never had these skin flare ups in the winter. So I'm still not sure of the erythema nodosum diagnosis, has anyone else noticed this skin issue popping up more in summer months rather than the winter?

My daughter was just recently diagnosed with Chrohns. 2 weeks before she was diagnosed she had erythema nodosum. At the time they didn't know she had Chrohns, so they did a strep test and she also had strep throat. They gave her antibiotics for the strep and the erythema nodosum cleared right up.

My son was given prednisone and an antibiotic in case it was staph, and he went back on azothiaprine, it has finally gone away. Thanks for the info!

Hello,

I have had Crohns since I was 11 (currently 25)--just recently (within the past 2 weeks), I have noticed painful bruising and even a bump on my shins, almost as if I hit them but I haven't. I recently went to my dermatologist all to be told that it was in fact erythema nodosum - a symptom of a crohns flare up.

Never have I seen this symptom before in the 14 years of living with this condition--not sure if this is due to recently being put on Cimzia or just part of growing old with this monster.

Either way, unfortunately, this condition really cant be treated unless severe (I was told I could be given prednisone if needed). Otherwise, it goes away on its own.
