10 year old daughter w/ UC -- SCD diet??

Thu, April 09, 2015 6:25 AM

My 10-year old daughter was recently diagnosed with UC, and although the meds (Canasa suppositories) have greatly helped the frequent stooling, etc., she is still in considerable pain every day.  She's also had c. diff and strep throat infections in the last month.  Her GI doc seems to think that the pain / lethargy will subside once her body gets all the infections under control.  I am beginning to have my doubts about that.  She's been off the antibiotics for C. Diff for a week now and her pain is actually worse this week than last.  We asked about changes we should make to her diet, but he didn't think we need to make any changes.  Has anyone else's child tried the SCD diet?  I know it's pretty restrictive, but I'm willing to try anything that will help her with the pain.

My 10 year old with UC also had C diff right now. What type of diets have you all followed while this infection is going on?? He's not going to the bathroom a lot and has been on Flagyl for 6 days. I'm wondering if the flagyl is also contributing to the loose stools!

Hi I really feel for you as a parent. My 7yr old daughter has also had C Diff. Has your child had a clear stool sample ? If not then get it tested as it may still be present and needs treating till gone. My daughter took nearly 3 mths to clear the c diff and your child may need more treatment. My daughter had vancomycin and she had recently had a totally clear sample. C diff is notoriously difficult to get rid of. I think until that's clear you can't really deal with the IBD. I hope that helps a little.

I've read the book on the SCD diet but haven't followed it. Under guidance of a GI we followed the diet described in a recent publication (put "Sigall-Boneh et al. 2014" into google and third choice will be a PDF to this article) in the fall and my daughter went into remission.  After 7 weeks on that diet we followed the Paleo diet (see "Against all Grain" blog for more info) to stay in remission but after a month my daughter begged to go back to "regular eating."  After a few months of regular eating my daughter is having another flare so we are back to the Sigall-Boneh et al. 2014 diet (I've described it briefly below).  I think it is a great alternative to going on prednisone to treat a flare, but it is really difficult to follow long term because it is so restrictive.

The Against all Grain cookbook has a nice comparison of SCD and Paleo at the beginning so you can see how they are the same and different. Many of the recipes are both SCD and Paleo.  Good luck with whatever you choose!
