humira vs remicade

Fri, February 26, 2016 11:49 AM

My son is 13 years old and has UC.  He also has autism with limited verbal communication which makes things a whole lot harder.  He has had UC for 5 years now.  He has had a few flareups this past year and this is his third round of Prednisone in just over a year.  While the Prednisone controls his flareups, the side effects are horrible.  He was put on 6mp at the beginning of the year.  He still has inflammation.  His doctor just increased his dosage again hoping to fully control things as we get closer to weaning off Prednisone.  The doctor just told me if things don't improve with this final increased dose, then we need to move to humira or remicade.  Both of these drugs scare me.  Does anyone have experience with these infusions to help ease my mind?  My son hasn't been growing either and his endocrinologist says there is nothing we can do while he is on Prednisone.  Thanks for your help.

I am 18 years old and just started Humira about two and a half months ago. At least on my dosage, I only have to get the injection every other week. It is an injection I can do at home - my parents give it to me, and I think being at home helps alleviate the stress of having to get it. I haven't noticed a major improvement yet but have noticed slight improvement, and I have been told Humira can take months to fully kick in. Hope this helps!
