Homebound Instruction?

Sat, July 16, 2016 7:04 PM

Prior to this year - when she first got sick and was diagnosed with UC - my daughter was a strong student. Over the last year - 10th grade - she missed 80 days of schools due to illness. We put a 504 plan in to protect her but it was very difficult for her to complete the work. She managed to finish all but one class - doing a lot of work on her own - and ended up with a B average. Now she has one class to do this summer.

She is not yet in full remission - has gone through the gauntlet of meds - Asacol, antibiotics, steroid, targeted steroids - Remicade. Next we will discuss adding 6MP or Methotrexate or going on to Enyvio.  Typically, she missed 2-3 days/week when she was sick and I fear this will continue in 11th grade until the right meds are found.

I'm considering homebound instruction but in our district this means one hour of instruction per course per week which is of course ridiculous. Also, it is all or nothing: either be enrolled to attend or have home instruction - she wouldn't be allowed to go to school some days.

I'm also starting to accept that she may be on a longer rime horizon then her friends; perhaps needing an additional year to complete high school.

Has anyone had experience with homebound instruction or any type of alternative? Cyber schools are an option.  We are in Montgomery County, PA.

Thank you.

There is a lot to think about when considering homebound instruction. Let's face it an hr a day per class, hahh, particularly in 11th grade...these kids are supposed to be readying for college.   What affect do you think it will have on your daughter socially?  So many kids that are dx w/one thing or another already feel like outcasts.  She may become very isolated / feel ostracized and suffer greatly with her own self-esteem.

One of my daughters did have home instruction for 4 weeks due to serious jaw surgery and it was fine for a short period of time.  But an entire school year is something else.

You can negotiate with your district to provide your daughter with the accommodations in the 504 and provide the flexibility for her to go to school.  Hopefully in the next 6 weeks she will begin to feel better and there won't be a problem,. She has the right to a free and appropriate education.

Cyber school too I believe would be very secluded; the computer certainly will not replace a teacher and classroom peers w/questions / answers and learning experience.

I'm sorry you are going thru this and wish you the best.
