Newly diagnosed 5 yr old

Fri, August 19, 2016 10:32 AM

My 5-yr-old daughter was just diagnosed with UC (1/2 to 2/3 of her colon) on Tuesday, after fighting with multiple doctors to even be willing to see her (symptoms of severe abdominal pain and extremely bloody stools - some stools were blood and mucus only).

She was put on 30mg of prednisone daily; we started Tuesday night, so she has had a total of 4 doses now. Her doctor suggested she would begin to feel relief likely by the end of the day on Tuesday, but since she has resumed BMs after her prep for the colonoscopy, things have only seemed to get worse. BMs every 2-3 hours, even through the night, copious blood (not just blood streaked stools, but actual blood) - she screams and cries and writhes on the toilet.

Am I just not being patient enough with the prednisone, or is this not normal? I have called the clinic (connected with one of the top children's hospitals in my state) but have not received a call back; in addition her "1 week follow up" has been scheduled 2.5 weeks out.
