My husband was just diagnosed with UC just last week and he also has a really rare kidney disease. Due to his kidney disease we do not want him taking any 5-ASAs die to the fact that they process through the kidneys. He was prescribed a steroid for 2 weeks and the taper down for another 2 weeks. The problem is my husband has done research on the SCD diet and believes that he can heal himself naturally so he refused to take the steroid or think about any other future medication...even though this is a chronic lifetime disease. Im all for diet changes and believe that long term yes he will have to make these changes but He has been in a flare up for approx 4 weeks now and his symptoms have improved slightly but I don't know how to convince him to take the medication to get over this flare up sooner. I'm afraid that if his body works too hard to get rid of the inflammation on it's own that this is going to hurt his kidneys worse then what taking the medication would do to them. If anybody has any suggestions for me that would be great!

I think you need to talk to a doctor, preferably one who specializes in colitis. He might be able to offer options, or at least monitor how the diet is working.
