Son diagnosed with Crohn's but no symptoms

Tue, July 28, 2009 8:05 AM

My son was diagnosed in October 2008 with Crohn's.  He does not have any Crohn's symptoms.  The only symptom he had was a very high fever (often up to 105).  After 30 days of fevers he developed erythema nodosum, which pointed to IBD.  After conducting a colonoscopy, they confirmed he had Crohn's.  It is so hard for me to accept that he has this disease since he does not have any of the normal symptoms.  Has anyone else ever experienced this?  Since he is only 8 years old, is there a chance that he will develop the other symptoms later in life?  I would love to hear others thoughts on his situation.

My 11 year old daughter has also been diagnosed with Crohn's and has none of the classic symptoms.  She had slight constipation, weight loss and a fever for a few months.  Endoscopy showed nothing and during the colonoscopy they did not see any damage to her colon that would indicate Crohn's but the biopsy that they performed showed inflammation which lead to the Crohn's diagnosis.  My question is has anyone else seen a delay in growth and delayed puberty caused by Crohn's?  Should I be concernered?

Wow!!!!!!!  Hi there.  My son is now 8 and was diagnosed in October of 2008 too.  His main symptom was fever!!!  He also had stomach pain, and blood in his stool but not diarrhea.  He had loss of appetite and lost 12 pounds.  He also had a loss of energy.  So he had some symptoms but my son presented with constipation which confused us until the colonoscopy confirmed crohns.  My son is on Pentasa, Imuran, prevacid, Vitamin D, Iron, Miralax.  Take care.

Wow, I can't believe there is someone else out there experiencing the fevers like my son.  I'm just sorry to hear that your daughter had to deal with this at such a young age.  My son was originally treated with 6-mp and pentasa with no success, then they tried 6-mp with Entocort and still no success.  The only thing that eliminates his fevers is the prednisone.  We are beginning remicade now, he goes for his second treatment this week.  I am anxious to see if the remicade works when he comes off this round of sterhoids.  How old is your daughter now?  How long has she been on Remicade?   Have you done anything with her diet?  It's hard for me to adjust Brett's diet since he doesn't have diarrhea.  It's hard to know what foods are a problem for him.

You are the first person that has had similar symtoms as my daughter. When she was between 3 and 4 she started showing symptoms including high fever and stomach ache. When she was 5 she started having high fevers 105 to 106 and in a lot of pain. Took her to the ER and found she had pancreatitis which eventually led to a Crohn's diagnosis. She still has high fevers every time she has a flare up. Hope this helps you. I pray that your child never has any symptoms. Our daughter has had major flare ups and symptoms out of control for the past 15 months or so. She is currently on Asacol and Remicade. She wants to send you a smiley face to cheer you up and give you hope. I have one more question. Did your son's Dr do the blood test that goes to San Diago for results?
