Can my baby have Crohn's?

Wed, August 05, 2009 12:00 AM

My son is almost 4 months old and from the time he was born has had stomach problems... He has reflux and is on Prevacid.  It seems like by the time his milk gets to his intestines, he is terrible pain (very fussy and drawing his legs up, not sleeping well).  He had troubles on breast milk, and we've tried just about every formula there is.   My concern is that my husband has a mild form of Crohn's disease and I am wondering if this could be affecting my son as well?

Is it too early to be diagnosed at 4 months old?  I have called his doctor to get advice and waiting to hear back.

Have you tried one of the elemental formulas?  I know they are very expensive but I think health plans have to cover them.  I don't know a lot about protein allergies but I had a friend with a baby with bloody stools.  It was a protein allergy so her breastmilk and all the standard formulas were out of the question.  They had to start using one of the elemental formulas and it has worked beautifully.

I have no idea about Crohn's in babies but thought I would pass along my friend's experience with the formulas.  Something to think about.....

Hi!

I'm sorry to hear your baby is in so much pain!  I don't know if this will help or not, but my son was just diagnosed at 14 with UC.  As an infant if he drank one bottle of formula, you would swear two would come back up.  As a toddler he was very fussy about what he ate.  For almost a year it was hard to get him to eat anything but oatmeal.  I think he just felt "bad" if he ate anything else.  He always had issues with diarrhea or constipation.  I don't know how early is too early, but it makes me wonder if my son was born with this.

Thanks for listening and I hope this helps!  I hope you and your child get relief and answers soon!
