I have a really good friend that is like a sister to me and her 17 yr old was  diagnosed with crohn's about 5 years ago. Since then they have tried remicade, then he was on prednisone which he couldn't take. He swole up like nothing I have ever seen before!!! I believe he is now on Imuran. Any way she took him to his Dr. today and he told her that in 5 yrs he hadn't went into remission after everything they have tried he believes there is nothing else he can do for him and that he would most likely die at a young age.  Is that true? Has anyone else been told this?

I'm so mad at the Dr. He is already in a bad mental state and then the Dr. tell him this!! He already is so mad about this disease that he no longer believes in God.

To top it all off they are very ,well lets call it money challenged, medicade called them and said that after he turns 19 which is a little more then a year that he will no longer have health insurance. He's meds are very expensive, not to mention if they decide to do the remicade treatments again. How can they afford this? Medicade sent her information on other programs he may be eligible for but he doesn't match any of them!! How can they just turn thier back on him!! He is so smart he has been working so hard to go to a good college and he may not be able to if he has to get 2 full time jobs to be able to afford meds.

Talk about a slap in the face!!!

Thanks

Becky

Hi, Becky.

I had a doctor when I was 19 who also gave me a gloomy prognosis for the disease and my life. I wont tell you how old I am now, decades later, but let me assure you that Im up there and even managed to get a masters degree and certification to teach preschool, grade school and college, and to direct summer day camps. (Currently, I am a happy artist.) I had a great mother who cooked so much good, bland-but-tasty food for me for 2 years, the time I had to take a leave from college. I think, no, I know she saved my life.

(Gee, I might have to remember what she used to cook for me and see if I can replicate it. I might try this for 2 weeks and then add foods back one at a time...Youve brought back helpful memories with your inquiry...)

He can apply for disability (SSDI//SSI) at the Social Security Administration, and then he can get medicaid. If they turn him down, apply again. Perhaps he is or will be eligible for Food Stamps as well.

I hate to hear stories like this. The Dr's with absolutly NO Compassion.  We went through the battle of trying to afford our 6 year olds meds. The remicade is soooo expensive.  I was told by a friend who is a nurse that you could apply for disability, then he would have insurance coverage.

I hope and pray his Dr's are wrong and I pray his faith returns. Sometimes thats all we have.
