section 504

Wed, September 16, 2009 8:06 PM

Can anyone fill me in on the section 504? I just found out about it and am considering doing it for my 10yr old son who has UC. My biggest concern is if they can test for anything not related to the UC. Teachers have been pushing to have him tested for attention/focus disorders but all of our Dr.'s have said they don't see any evidence of that. I've explained that when he has ulcers lining his colon focus is difficult at best. I've tried to educate them on the disease but they see a relatively healthy boy and assume I'm overreacting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any way i could get a copy of that form the m.d. filled out at his office for 504. My sons GI told me it would be hard to get 504 for my son and all i seem to get from the school is the run around.  you would a pediatric G.I. would want to help these children and have a form or something to help them with school.  My son is 15 and dx in july 2009 so it has been a roller coaster ride to say the least.    Thank You

Yes, absolutely file for the section 504. My daughter who is 12 has had the 504 for 2 years now. I sat down with the principal and school nurse to fill out the paperwork. I also gave them some information about Crohn's disease. She is permitted to leave the classroom at any minute without disrupting the class. If she misses a day of school after 3 consecutive days due to Crohn's issues, she receives and hour of instruction per day missed. There are other benefits as well. We keep some special snacks and change of clothes discreetly in the nurses office. They couldn't have been kinder concerning this issue. Not to mention, it raises awareness about their illness.

  Best of Luck!  Lynne

I'm so glad you have an appointment with the GI.  If you can get the paperwork ahead of time, he could maybe fill it out at the appointment???  I guess it depens on the form.  Since our initial one was a single page, Claire's doctor just whipped it out at the visit.

I think about all these kids go through and how important it is that people who spend a lot of time with the (like their teachers!) understand what is going on.  And, I take a moment to chastise myself for not being more empathetic to people who have crossed my path with Crohn's disease & UC!  There have been a few and I was totally ignorant about what it was and what it was doing to their body!!

Okay - off my soapbox and back to work.  :-)  Let me know how it goes if you have time.

Take care,

Julie

Thanks Julie-

He has an appt w/GI in October. I'm seriously leaning toward doing this. Very few of his teachers or even the school nurse have bothered to do any independent checking on IBD. It it SO upsetting when the nurse looks at me in amazement when he has an accident! As though he soiled himself just to annoy her?! I think having the 504 would force some of the faculty to realize that this is NOT simple irregularity and acknowledge that some concessions need to be made.

Thanks again!

Under the "kids & teens" tab on this website, there is a 504 template and some advice.  My daughter was just diagnosed in June - she's 6.  At the support group meeting I went to, they advised me to call the district, tell them I needed a 504.  I did that and got connected to the 504 coordinator for my daughter's school (sure your son's school has one too).  She gave me initial paperwork for the doctor.  After he completed it, I returned it to the school along with the guide for teachers (on the same tab of this website as the 504 info) and had a meeting to develop the 504 plan.  It went really well and has been very helpful.

Hope that helps a bit.  I'm not an expert but hopefully, it will get you started!

Take care,

Julie
