When to freak out - siblings

Sun, September 27, 2009 12:00 AM

Okay, my 6 yr old dx with Crohn's in June this year.  My 10 yr old just had his second very bloody stool in a week.  I know there can be lots of reasons but I am really worried.  Does anyone have more than one child with IBD?  I'm calling the pediatrician irregardless.....or should I call the GI now?  I'm sure I'm overreacting.  My husband thinks I'm crazy.  But I am worried.

Thank you for your replies.  I took him to the pediatrician yesterday.  She agreed that gien our family history, it is best to at least check the stool and do some labwork.  If all that comes back perfectly fine, I'll breathe a sigh of relief - for now.  :-)  I'm sure you all can relate!

I think you are on the right track by calling the drs and having your other child followed-up.

Bloody stool certainly isn't a common things, but it can be lots of things.   Try not to jump to too many conclusions.   Who knows, it may just be hemmeroids.

I had my older daughter checked out a couple of years ago because she has a younger sister w/CD and she herself is very lean and was having some upset stomache issues.   The tests came back fine.  She only had mild inflammation and was sent home with previcid for a week or two.   It was a lot of worrying and I am thankful we found out.

Try to stay strong and make the appts.  I know it is tough, but it will work out in the end.   It always does.

I wish you and your family my best.

Sorry to hear of your scare.  I know that the incidence of IBD in siblings is higher than in two unrelated children.

I have four boys.  One(29 yr/dx @15) with UC and one dx with Crohn's last year at 14 yrs.  I also suspect my 20 yr old has some tendency (he is 6' 1" weighs 140lbs) he has had spells of unexplained weakness and is never interested in eating.  However, when I had the 20 yr old tested  (3 yrs ago) he did not have any elevated inflammation levels (that was the year he felt weak).

So I think your plan to have your son checked out is a good one. The best news would be there is nothing.  The next best is finding out what it is-- that is a problem and knowing what action to take.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
