Enemas or suppositories?

Fri, November 20, 2009 11:52 AM

Have you used either of these for your children to heal their colons as a way of putting steroids directly on the colon as oppossed to a systemic steroid?

How was it to use and did it work? I can only imagine the fight I would get from my 9 yr old but really don't want to use prednisone if we could try this first!

My daughter's only symptoms right now is very loose diarrhea in the morning and she is pretty good the rest of the day.

Appetite is so so, and she doesn't complain of tummy aches excpet that when she goes in the morning she always thinks she has to go more but doesn't! She has UC.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Oh she is on Pentasa,VSL#3 and vitamins

My daughter was just released from the hospital this week and is 9.  We are doing oral Prednisone, oral Colazal and a Rowasa enema every night.  After 3 nights of the Rowasa, her bleeding stopped after it going off and on almost all year, with the last week of about 20 BM's a day of pure blood stools.  I think the direct contact of this med really helped her tremendously.  She has been so ill this time around with vomiting, etc. and this morning she was up for the first time dancing around the house.

She initially had a hard time with the enema the first night, but I told her that once we do it a couple of times we will have it down to a science (we have to do them for a month).   By night three it was easier, but she isnt' in so much pain anymore either.  I think helping convince her how important this procedure is to her getting well has a lot to do with it.  Our kids want to be well.  Just don't get frustrated with resistance and use all of your patience the first couple of times.....then they realize it isn't that bad and you establish a routine. The thought is scarier than actually doing it.

Best of luck in whatever you are able to try!

The enemas are surely more difficult the younger the child. It's not pleasnat no matter what age, but having to explain the need for it to a young child would be very difficult. This is such a hard diagnosis to deal with as child and parent. Hang in there.

Oh, one more thing.... yes, the rectal suspensions were initially harder for my dgt. to agree to, but when she realsized the alternative could be a crisis and possibly going back on Prednisone or worse, hospitalization, that made it "easier". Nothing is easy with this disease is it ?

Hang in there.

Yes, our daughter has been on Hydrocortisone and Sodium Butyrate in the past and you are right....they are much better than Prednisone. Our daughter had horrible side effects for Prednisone so she is willing to try anything rather than that medicine. Betweeen Hydrocortisone and S.B., the Sodium Butyrate is preferred since there are no side effects. It is a compound made by a pharmacist. There is research on it and how it helps IBD.

If your daughter is experiencing diarrhea and no bleeding see if Florastor may help. It is over-the-counter(expensive, but works) and has been a life saver in stopping diarrhea. You can ask her doctor about it. If you want more information about it you can go on their web site. If you want me to tell you more info about it just reply and I will tell you more about how it has helped our daugher. She is 18 yrs. old now and was diagnosed at 12 yrs. old. It was a tough way to enter the teenage years.

I haven't used either.  There was a time we used a rectal steroidal foam.   No, it wasn't pleasant, but it was for a short period of time.....I want to say 2 weeks.  She was younger than your daughter at the time, I'm not sure if that is good or bad, but we got through it.  Being that your daughter is older, you may have luck explaining to her that it is something temporary that you'd like to try in lieu of the oral steroids.

Being a parent isn't easy........good luck
