surgery duing college

Sun, January 10, 2010 4:55 PM

My son is 19 years old.  We visited with a surgeon who recommended that he should have surgery due to the severity of the disease.  The surgery will be a 2 or 3 step surgery; therefore, we have thought about beginning the first step now versus waiting until May.  Also, my son is on Prednisone and Cimzia.  The surgeon mentioned that both of these drugs do more harm to the body than good (in his case), and it would be better to have him off of these meds since he's been on them consistently for a long time. My son has a scholarship, and I was wondering if anyone knows how this would affect his scholarship if he took a "medical leave" for a semester.  Is it possible to put everything on "hold" due to an illness?

ADA - As a university professor, I often come into contact with the Americans with Disabilities Act, but not specifically with respect to athletics.  Still, the law should be similar in its protection of your son.

Academically - If he hasn't already, he should register with his school's disability services office (all have one); this will cover his (pardon the pun) butt should he need time off and have teachers who are not understanding enough to give him extensions and other concessions when his chronic illness flares up.  The ADA law is what guides this protection too.

I wish him the best.

My son is on an athletic scholarship.we just learned on 12/31 that he will need an ileostomy on 1/26. He is a wrestler so that means end of career. We spoke with his coach and AD and they assured us his scholarship stands. His coaches are completing paperwork for a "medical redshirt"- He had to sit out this qtr but hopfully will return in April. Because wrestlers typically are given a redshirt year-giving them 5yrs of schlorship we were also told that his scholarship stands next year-his 5th year. I would think this would apply for your son as well. he is currently on remicade he would be due for a tx right before surgery but his surgeon said do not get the treatment. Obviously they are concerned for infection and i am told that the prednisone and biologics can make the tissues harder to heal. Good luck to you and your son and please update your post on how things go. sue

Well, that's great to hear.  We are going to meet with his coach this week regarding his tennis scholarship.  Then, we will meet with the college regarding the academic scholarship.  Thanks for your words of encouragement.

It would probably depend on his school/scholarship but I would be surprised if he lost it for taking a medical leave.  I'm a junior in college and had a really bad flare during my first year and had to take a semester off. I went on a medical leave of absence and didn't loose any scholarship money.  I'll probably have to take a few summer classes to get caught up but my school was really good about everything.  I don't remember exactly what I had to do to get the leave - my parents did most of it - but I was able to essentially put everything on hold, leave and get better, and then go back and pick up right where I left off.
