Nausea relief?

Wed, February 10, 2010 4:56 PM

Does anyone have a good way to sooth a nauseous stomach?

My son is 11 and was diagnosed with CD a year ago.  He is doing ok, except that every couple of weeks he gets really nauseous and vommits a lot.

Its always the same thing....He will throw up everything in his stomach and then throw up stomach acid every 20-30 minutes for half a day. Then he falls asleep. They next day, he is still nauseous, but stops throwing up and starts eating and drinking again. After half a day of this, he feels all better.  The whole thing lasts about 24 hours.

The pediatric GI (who is considered a leader in the field) doesn't know why my son is getting this sporadic nausea, followed by weeks of health.  We did food diaries, but nothing stood out as a trigger for the nausea. She doesn't suspect it is a symptom of the medicines, either, since the nausea isn't constant. It just seems to come out of nowhere.

The GI suggested we try Prevacid, which we just started today.  I have given my son peppermint tea, tums, gingerale, camomile tea.  Nothing seems to help when he is feeling nauseous.

Perhaps his Dr. can prescribe Zofran for nausea.  When nausea occurs with regularity without obvious GI cause, then you might consider a neurology consult to rule out another problem such as intracranial pressure or fluctuation in intracranial spinal fluid.  Just a thought.....

Thanks for the tip.  We'll give it a try.

Hi Mom,

You have tried everything I would have recommended for the nausea except for one, candied ginger.   It can be found in Asian grocery/specialty stores.   It has been used by Asians for centuries.

Good luck, hope he finds some relief.
