Chances of having my children having Crohns?

Sat, February 27, 2010 1:00 AM

My husband was dx last year after having issues for years. He landed up having surgery due to having 2 fistuallas and 2 abbsecces. It seems like his Crohns attacks his illuem the most. We are now expecting our 6th child. Our first born are twins. One of twins was on the lower side of the growth chart but has since caught up (they are now 8 going on 9) But one of the twins has never caught up and in fact is very thin and always looks tired and gaunt. We did see a pedi GI before we knew that husband had crohns and he did  a upper endocope and of course saw nothing. My question is what are his chances of possibly having Crohns? He doesn't go to the bathroom that much but does struggle to go once he has to go. I am not really sure what or if anything is wrong with him but I do know he barely eats.

Hello.  Six kids including twins!  Wow!  Statistic-wise, when I was pregnant with my first child, I had to go to genetic counseling because my dad had Crohn's.  I have it, as well as my brother plus we just found out that my dad's brother also was diagnosed with it before he died of other causes not related to CD.  They told me the chances of my offspring getting it were 60 percent BUT 40 percent they may not.  I don't believe much in statistics.  Miracles do happen, but three kids later, my middle child ended up being diagnosed with it 4 years ago.  My other two appear to be safe at the moment.  Don't know if this is any help, but GOOD LUCK.

Hello there.  Like the other moms, I agree that more testing should be done.  My son's major symptoms were  decreased apetite, weight loss, decreased energy, and constipation not diarrhea.  My son's blood work showed an elevated sed rate and c-reactive protein which pointed to something bigger going on.  Although my son does have stomach involvement an endoscopy along with colonoscopy should be done to diagnose.  It could turn out to be nothing, but I think you should do the testing for peace of mind and to start treatment if you son does in fact turn out to have a form of IBD.  I will keep him in my prayers and thoughts.  Keep us updated.

My husband also has Crohn's and my daughter has UC.  I don't know the exact statistics but with this disease, anything is possible.

I am concerned your son didn't have a colonoscopy. If he does have Crohn's, an upper endoscopy is only looking at half of the problem as Crohn's is found more often in the intestine vs. the stomach.  Perhaps your DR can run some blood tests to see if he has the markers?

Not sure if your insurance would cover or not, but my son had a Prometheus test done to check blood levels/markers for Crohn's vs. Colitis.  I don't know age wise when it's most reliable.  He was a teen when his was drawn.
Just a thought.
