Older UC Patients

While my heart goes out to the kids with IBD, and their loving and stressed-out parents, I wonder why I see little discussion of late-onset (50 years) ulcerative colitis patients.  My husband falls into this category, and his most-recent flare-up (3rd in 9 years) is quite serious this time.

He's started Remicade (3rd treatment this Friday), yet doesn't see enough relief yet; the doc says the 3rd dose is when saturation happens, so we hope to see more than just a little relief and then a plateau.  Still, if it can stave off surgery, we're happy.

My question today is diet.  He's always been a healthy/slim man, and just lost 20% of his body weight.  This, plus the natural weakness and tiredness, is keeping him down and unable to do most daily tasks; he now goes back to work, but rests and uses the bathroom more than he works.  He loves spicy foods (and I'm glad to see him eat!), yet I fear that they may be causing harm at the other end.

Has anyone found a simple "Do's and Dont's of Cooking for UC Patients" website that I can use?  Yes, I'll look at the special carb diet book too.

I appreciate your help.

SCD really should help but if your husband does try it he will probably lose more weight at the beginning. Eating plenty of good fats to replace the carbs is really important after the introductory stage. I lost enough weight to make me quite worried in the first few months and then it stabilised to just right.

I have used SCD with really good results and cook with a lot of Indian spices. Madhur Jaffrey  is my favourite cookery author. Most of the food is thickened with onion, ground almond or yoghurt rather than flour and I am fairly sure that some of the spices actually help me. Even fairly hot chilli seems fine. Chinese food is the worst for me.

Not quite 50 but felt much older three years ago. xx
