Has anyone had a problem with the generic form of Imuran (Azathioprine)??

Hello,

I am getting ready to start my son on Imuran but I have read that the dosage for the generic form may be different than the name brand and that some people have had reactions to something that is in the generic form (Azathioprine).  Anyone have any experience with this?  I already filled the script and they gave me Azathioprine, but now I am wondering if I should go back to the pharmacy and try to get the name brand (Imuran).  You can reply to my post or email me at jcraig007@comcast.

My daughter was diagnosed at the age of two in Feb. of 2008.  She has been on azathioprine compound (1x daily) since the begining and also take sulfasalzine (3x daily).  She has not had any side effects or bloody episodes since.  Follow your doctor, but if you don't feel right with that doctor then find one you do.  Best thing for us was challenging our doctor for answers.  We finally ended up at a children's hospital and got correctly diagnosed.  Trust your gut!

My daughter (diagnosed with UC 3 years ago) was on Imuran but it was too expensive every month so we switched to Azathioprine.  Her doc said sometimes there is a problem and they can add a medicine with it that they use for gout.  She took lots of blood tests and it was fine for her.  She didn't need to mix that other medicine for gout so she's now on 1 1/2 tablets of Azathioprine down from 3 1/2 tablets.  She's also on 4 Lialda, one Women's One a Day, one Oscal and one Ultimate Flora Critical Care.  She also watches her diet.  She also has blood tests every 3 months.

Hi.  My son has been on generic Imuran since May of 2009 and has had no side effects.  Nausea and Vomitting is a side effect of the medication and taking it with food should minimize this.  My son has not experienced side effects.  Ask your pharmacist if they can keep him on the same generic and not switch companies.  I hope this helps.  Take care.

My daughter had nausea and vomiting from Azothiaprine.  I am not sure if it was due to being a generic form or just that she couldn't tolerate it.  She had stomach issues with Azasan (similar to Imuran I believe)  but not as severe.
