FALL FLARE UPS

Post Subject: FALL FLARE UPS

My 15 year old son has Crohns, he is in the middle of a flare up right now. My older son & I noted that my 15 year old has always had stomach issues in the fall even before he was diagnossed. When I asked his doctor if there is a seasonal allergy that effects the stomach. She told me there aren't any studies, but her practice is busiest in the fall with her patients having flare ups. She asked other GI doctors and they agree that their patients also have more flare ups in the fall.

If you suffer from flare ups in the fall more than anytime of year please share with me & also your geographic location. I have a few friends with IBS and Colitis they also experience more problems in the fall.

My 9 year old son always had flare ups during transitional times.  This is the first fall that he hasn't had an issue.  He is currently taking 6mp.  We've been through counseling to manage the stress related to the chronic illness.  I really think that that has helped.  He is a type A type of person, and managing stress is a helpful way for our family to handle all of this.  We've noticed spring (when school gets out), and fall have been times that were especially bad.  This is the best he has done in years.

Hi,

How old is your son? The fall is a stressful time for both children & Adults. Summer is over, back to school and at work we become more intense. Summertime I feel is always more care free.

I just spoke to my son's doctor and she again told me October is always the worst time of year for all her patients. What type of medicine is your son taking?

Take Care,

 Gail

I am going to keep an eye on this. My son was just diagnosed last week.  His flare up started three weeks ago.  He had this happen two previous times, once in the beginning of summer and once in the spring.  He also had a stressful event happen at the same time so it could be that or the season change.  Very interesting.  Good luck.

I think so. Do you mind telling what part of the country you live in?

My son was 10 at the time of diagnosis in 2009 in the fall and has now had his first flare up in October 1 year later.  Maybe something to it?

Hi Julie,

We live in Westchester County New York, which is about 30 miles north of New York City. I have the feeling that there must be some bacteria in the fall, I am not a scientist just a mother with a gut feeling. No pun intended.I will talk to my son about contacting your son, so far he has been in denial. Feels that the dr. is wrong there is nothing wrong with him . Perhaps having someone to talk to over the internet willbe easier for him.

                                    Thanks,

Hi there,
My son is also 15 and has always had flare ups in the fall, with the exception of this year (knock wood) and last. He has been on Humira for about a year and a half now. We live in Northern California, about 2 hours north of Sacramento in a little town called Orland. I would love it if your son and mine could talk. Nicholas does not know anyone else with Crohns's and while his friends are supportive, they clearly will never understand. Hope he is on the mend soon, and I am also curious to know where your location is as well, because I have always been curious about the flares in fall...
Good Luck
Julie
