Crohn's and School

realizing that there are differing degrees of the disease at any one time, we found that despite remicade at double the dose every 4 weeks for years along with a host of supplemental meds - my son never got to the point where he could have a life outside of bing homebound - yet! he too, started out with his grades dropping and not doing homework. after his diagnosis, we found out he was sitting in the back of the class focusing so *** managing the pain and not having to jump up every few minutes to go to the bathroom since it would draw suspicous activity to himself. also the teachers were less than understanding. his anxiety would build. when it was apparent he could no longer stay in class, we enrolled him in our county's home hospital bound program in which his grades soared to all a's as did his confidence. he still had interaction with the other kids online. he did this from 10th grade to graduation (which he could not attend). he is now an online student with the college and is planning to work from home until we can find a cure for this horrible, debilitating disease! i was worried about the lack of socialization and the isolation but it turns out he made friends through a writers site online from all over the world as well as classmates online speak to each other. he is very well rounded without any social problems as a result of staying home. with a lot of planning and understanding it can be done but it is not for everyone. his was a particularly difficult case (still is) and staying home is not for everyone if it can be helped.
