Alternative approaches - Helminthic therapy

Mon, November 08, 2010 12:51 PM

Anyone have experience with helminthic therapy?
(explanation from Wikipedia: "a type of immunotherapy, is the treatment of autoimmune diseases and immune disorders by means of deliberate infestation with a helminth or with the ova of a helminth. Helminths are parasitic worms such as hookworms and whipworms."

Thanks.

Alternative approaches - Helminthic therapy I emailed Dr. W yesterday and he said, "The agent that we developed is working its way through both the US and European food and drug administrations.  It is still considered experimental.  There are several clinical trials underway both in the US and Europe.  One of the pharmaceutical companies making this agent for the various studies is called Ovamed."  Check out the Ovamed website which includes a forum (like this one) where a few people have written about their expriences.

Alternative approaches - Helminthic therapy

My daughter was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago so I am just looking into this but I think it looks really interesting and promising for the future.

If you go to www.pubmed.org and type "Helminthic therapy crohns" in the search area you will get a listing of related articles.  By clicking on individual titles you can read the abstracts to many scientific peer reviewed journal articles for free.

There is a current NIH funded grant (project number: 2R01DK058755-10A2)  You can find a dsecription at NIHs project description website: http://projectreporter.nih.gov/

Also here is a blog by someone who went to Cameroon to get infected to cure his asthma.  He includes the abstracts to his references.
