Remission??? with diarrhea and blood

Wed, November 10, 2010 10:34 PM

Hello,

My son is 5 yrs old and has UC.  He has been having diarrhea (and some formed stools) and a little bit of blood.  According to his colonoscopy and his lab work, he is in "remission"! He is currently on Colazal and Imuran, I also started Canasa Suppositories tonight.  I am just curious what your childrens remission's are like.  Do they ever have diarrhea? blood? He has been off of Prednisone since June and this is the longest he has been off of it in a long time, that is why we started Imuran. I just dont know if this is just what his "remission" is going to be like. He has been on Imuran since February and according to his labs he is at a therapeutic level.  I know all kids are different but I am just curious, do other kids that are in remission have diarrhea???
Any input would be helpful :)

I always thought remission meant absence of symptoms. Our Dr. always wants to know if there is any blood.  Diarrhea doesn't concern me as much but from what you have described I would not classify your son as being in remission.  I hope you find something that works so he can start feeling better!

Sandy, For us my answer for the most part is no.  No diarrhea except once when she had a stomach virus and then a couple of times when I could tie it to a specific food.  Our ped GI said that ultimately he didn't want us to see any blood and if we did, he wanted to know.  Now, all that said, I know "normal" is different kid to kid.  It's great to hear that his labs and scope look good.  Can you tie the diarrhea back to a specific food??  Is he complaining of any pain?

Glad things are going well, at least for the most part, for you on the Imuran.
