Crohn's study by Cambridge University, very interesting...

I am new here and seem to remember something about restrictions on posting links.

I ran across a study while searching about Crohn's disease that caught my attention.

It was a study by the University of Cambridge that was published in June of 2007.
If it is ok to do so, I will post a link.

The reason it caught my eye is it found a genetic link between Crohn's disease and type 1 diabetes. I don't have a clue about it's implications but it sure makes me think that my son got a raw deal, genetically speaking. His grandmother on his mothers side has Crohn's and I have type 1 diabetes, that just aint right. The poor guy got shafted by genetics. I don't even know what to think about it right now, truly depressing.

Interesting article, T's Dad! My thoughts are aligned with yours regarding the diet contributing to the problem but not the cause. Now that is JUST my opinion and I know there are others who feel differently.

We have some randomized autoimmune problems in our family. Skipped both Claire's Dad and I but our sweet girl seems to be "the perfect storm" of the immune system gone haywire some days. Why did some of this skip us and her brother but not her? Who knows.... But I definitely agree that the autoimmune diseases are related. Some of the diseases that we have been able to identify in our family are missing from the list in the "leaky gut" article.

I hope that in our lifetimes and definitely in the lifetimes of our chldren, the genetic predisposition will be indentified and hopefuly, in turn, the cure customized by patient. It is interesting to me that almost no two patients are exactly alike.

Yes, all auto immune disease are somewhat related. The part that made this one so interesting is that it found a concrete genetic link between the two and their immune response.
Type 1 diabetes immune response is the result of a viral response that has gone wrong. If Crohn's has this same component, then the idea of our diet "causing Crohn's", is not correct. This in and of itself does not mean the diet doesn't contribute to the disease, but it debunks it as a root cause.

Give him the best chance you can by reading Life Without Bread by Lutz and Allen. It is a fascinating book about the health benfits of eating low-carb (not really about gluten-free) and has made an enormous difference to my health over the last four years. Wolfgang Lutz was an Austrian doctor who treated many patients by changing their diets.
