International adopted son -- chronic GI condition.

Hello,  my son is 4 years old.  He came to us from an oversees country at age 2 with giarida.  He was treated with Flagyl 3x and his stools were cleared.

He was diagnosed with lactose intolerance.

He has loose stools several times a day.  We are potty training but since he cant control #2, its difficult.  I was hoping that someone hear could  suggest some potty training ideas for a child with GI issues.  Also, his GI team is confounded.  ALl his tests are negative.

When he is on Flagyl, and until this month he had rounds of treatment, his stool forms up.  Always.  Within 36 hours, of his first dose of Flagyl, it formed.   Does this kind of reaction ring anybells?  I know my vet gave my cat Flagyl for GI problems.  And it worked so I know it can work for other problems besides infection.

What confounds the docs, is that his growth is phenomenal.  He has no deficiencies.

Thanks

Potty training can be a bit more challenging with an IBD child than not, but it can be done (just takes a bit longer).  One of the things I found helpful was to keep it as low-stress as possible.  My daughter would get so upset if she had an accident (her princess panties!) that I would just respond that it's no big deal and we can clean up in a jiffy.   I would always have her "try" to go thoughout the day and before we would leave the house.  You'd be surprised how many times she said she didn't have to go and sure enough, she'd "try for mommy" and go.   Also, I kept a complete set of clothes, wipes, towel, etc. in our cars, along with a training potty.   This way, even if we were on the road, she'd be able to go if she had to.  Diet played a larger part than I had known.   Once we got you gut under control with diet, her bms were more predictable and formed.

Good luck in your training, it will happen.
