Most of the redness and inflammation went away within a week or so of changing my diet but I was left with brown marks for several months. These gradually faded away completely.

I was sure my diet was the answer because for a long time I would get very itchy just a few hours after eating  sugar by mistake and sometimes itchy red spots started to reappear. A great incentive to stick to the diet! It is also very effective in controlling uc but that took much longer.

Thank you for the reply Lca.  No one can pinpoint why or what the rashes are for my son as well.  It's got to be the IBD. After adjusting your diet did the rashes go away?

I had a severe rash (hands, arms, legs, feet) red spots and raised patches which later blistered. The doctors couldn't identify it despite three biopsies. I got rapid relief by starting the scd diet (no sugar, grains or processed food). The diet has also made a huge difference to uc but that took longer.

With hindsight  think the rash was a reaction to bacterial overgrowth.
