Bloody bowel movements

Mon, September 26, 2011 4:48 AM

All,

I have U/C for two years now and I think my four year old daughter might be developing the disease as well. My daughter has been having bloody bowel movements on and off for two months now. As being a U/C patient as soon as I saw blood in her stool I took her to the doctor and was told she had a anal fissure. I was given Miralax and was sent home.

After the Miralax her bowel movements got softer and she did not bleed but as soon as we stopped the Miralax, she went back to hard, bloody stools. I have given her soluble fiber and Miralax which helped but as soon as she stops treatment her symptoms return.

What can I ask her doctor? She does not have the usual symptoms of  UC like diahrea, she is more constipated than anything. Any suggestions on her symptoms will be greatly appreciated. I am really scared that she might have UC at such a young age!!!

Given your own history, I would follow up with a pedi-gi.   Bloody bowel movements  / fissures are not "typical" for toddlers, and the sooner a diagnosis is made the better.

My daughter was diagnosed at 4 and it wasn't 'til five years later that I was diagnosed with CD too.

Going to a pedi gi will give you peace of mind if anything else.
