ADHD and Crohns

Wed, October 05, 2011 8:56 AM

My 10 yr. old was recently diagnosed with ADHD.  Because of this, his Dr. would like to start him on Ritalin.  If it was up to me, he wouldn't be on the medication, but the school doesn't know how to handle him.  Anyway, I have had Crohns since I was 19( I am now 41) and would like advice on getting my son tested for Crohns before he starts his medication.  He shows some signs of Crohns ( stomach complaint, low immune system, on again/off again migrans).  Should I get him tested before he begins Ritalin, or it does it matter?  Has anyone dealt with an ADHD child with Cohrones?  Any advice would help.

Have you made modifications to your child's diet? There are several additives/preservatives, including food coloring, that have been linked to hyperactivity or what is now being diagnosed as "ADHD".

Your child has certain rights and is entitled to an education.  Just because a child may set "challenges" to the faculty, doesn't mean they have the authority to demand medication to alter that.  Perhaps they need to educate themselves with dealing with active children.  They can learn, it is just a matter of finding the path that works best.

I remember years ago seeing an interview that Tom Cruise did and guess what, his teachers wanted to put him on meds too!   His mom resisted and he credits her reluctance to contributing to the person he is today.   There is a lot of information available.   I would suggest trying to read everything you could get your hands on prior to adding behavioral meds.

Good luck
