Looking for a surgeon

Fri, June 29, 2012 5:40 PM

My son has had Crohn's for 10 years. He is now 24 and has been managing the pain and problems associated with Crohn's all these years.  But this past year has been rough. Between his new job and lots of stress associated with it and being out on his own the pain and flare ups are becoming more frequent. They have recommended surgery and then remicade. His  area of problem reside in the Ileum. What should we look for in finding a good surgeon. What questions? any advise?

I would ask for a referral from his GI. They know who the best surgeons are for this particular type of surgery, and the best surgeons in general. Ask him/her how many resections they have done in their career, if they feel comfortable doing this surgery, and if they think they will be able to do it laparoscopically. You want a surgeon that has experience bottom line.
