Breastfeeding on Asacol

Fri, May 10, 2013 2:27 PM

I have found mixed information on breastfeeding while on Asacol. I was on it my entire pregnancy with no concern from OB or GI (class B). At the hospital, they told me it was fine to breast feed on Asacol, but 6 weeks later I told my son's pediatrician what I was taking, he said he did some research, and told me I shouldn't breastfeed. I switched to formula and was quite devastated that I couldn't breastfeed. Now I am almost due with #2, still on same dose of Asacol, and reconsidering  the advice I got. Does anyone have information on the safety of breastfeeding while on Asacol?

Hello I went into a bad flare 2 weeks after I gave birth to my son in January.  I a still in a flare but much better than I was.  I have been breastfeeding him the entire time he is a healthy little chunk and 6 months old now.  I have been on Asacol sense he was born and he has been totally fine I have also had to take prednisone a couple different times now during these past 6 months and he has been fine.  I called the hospital where I gave birth and spoke with someone in the lactation department she looked up the info for me and said both of these meds were safe while breastfeeding.

Good luck to you!

I hope this helps.
