Pregnancy / Delivery after Surgery

Sun, November 03, 2013 9:33 AM

Hi - I was diagnosed with UC 24 years ago and had a total colectomy with an ileo-anal pull through 22 years ago.  My husband and I are now thinking about having children, but I haven't found an OB in the DC / Northern VA area that has experience with my medical history and the effects of pregnancy.  (My GI didn't have any recommendations.)  I would like to be fully informed about what to expect before we go down this road, but I don't know what questions to ask - I don't know what I don't know.  So I'd like to talk to someone who has had other patients like me and can explain risks, complications, etc. every step of the way.  I'd appreciate any suggestions on doctors or any information on your experiences.  Thank you!

In 2004, When my GI doctor suspected I had crohn's when I was newly pregnant, he told me to go to a teaching hospital as they are more on the cutting edge especially in multi-specialty cases. I went for treatment in Chevy chase, MD  (for GI). My ob/gyn was at Georgetown hospital. Both docs are great.  I typically don't present textbook - my doctor gets that and tries to figure out my puzzle. (My last gi  didn't do that he just kept saying it was anxiety - don't get me started on that!). I hope that is helpful.
