Trying to conceive with active Crohn's Disease

Wed, November 06, 2013 2:04 PM

I am 30 years old and have had Crohn's Disease since I was 9. I have never truly been in remission, although I've been well controlled on a number of different medications. I have been off methotrexate for 8 months now in an attempt to get pregnant, but my inflammation continues to be high pretty high (as indicated by my bloodwork). I am only on Cimzia now to control the Crohn's and my accompanying joint pain, but I have symptoms every day.

This is my first month actually trying to get pregnant and I took an early pregnancy test that came back negative. In an effort to not get discouraged, can anyone tell me if they were able to conceive with active Crohn's? How long did it take? Is there anything natural I can do to help this process? Thanks for the help!

In general women with IBD are able to get pregnant and have health pregnancies as long as they are well prior to getting pregnant.  As stated in our fact sheet on pregnancy and IBD, "women should be well before becoming pregnant.   It is not a good idea to begin a pregnancy when the disease is flaring, when the woman has recently begun a new treatment or when she is on steroid medication".  To learn more view the fact sheet http://www.ccfa.org/assets/pdfs/pregnancyfactsheet.pdf and be sure to speak with your doctor.
