Breastfeeding while taking Humira and 6-MP

Wed, March 12, 2014 12:33 PM

I am 35 weeks pregnant, and have crohns disease. I have  a planned c-section date for April 4th. I have been taking both humira and 6-MP throughout my entire pregnancy without any problems and now that the end is near the topic of breastfeeding has come up. I visited with the pediatrician today and he did not seem well informed on what to do. He looked through his book and just told me the risk level of breastfeeding while on these drugs. I see that people have no problems breastfeeding while on Humira but as with the immunomodulators (6-MP) I can't find much information. Has anyone had any experience on these medications while breastfeeding?

Thank you!!!

Hi,

I have been on imuran and Humira (through my whole pregnancy) and have been breastfeeding for 10 months now.

I did TONS of research and spoke to alot of different sources and each one said the benefits outweigh any risk.

Also breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the risk of the baby getting crohns etc.

If you have any questions you can email me ash_halow@hotmail.com

Hope all is well with you and your new baby!
