Phthalates in Asacol bad for pregnant women?

Sun, March 30, 2014 8:53 PM

Hello, I have relatively mild ulcerative colitis which I control with asacol. I have been reading a little bit about phthalates that are present in asacol. (I believe they play a role in the time release mechanism of the drug). Apparently people taking asacol have higher levels of phthalates in their urine, and some phthalates cause an increase birth defects in mice. I'm wondering what anyone else knows about this and if there are any alternative medicines without the same problem. Here is one of the sources where I have been getting my info: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2649218/.

Thanks!

Hi!

I was able to take Asacol during bioth of my pregnancies without problems.  My pregnancies were normal and I am blessed with two daughters who were healthy and full term.  I did not breast feed while on Asacoll,  under the advice of my physician.  My daughters are now 16 and 13.  Asacol has been very effective for me.  I am now on Delzicol and make sure I take it  routinely.
