Period causes UC flare ups

Tue, September 16, 2014 6:20 PM

So I was diagnosed last February with Ulcerative Colitis though I have been experiencing symptoms since last november and one thing I have noticed is that every time I get my period my UC flares up terribly. This is made worse by the fact that my period has always been irregular so I never know when I will get it and experience a flare. My doctor says that the severity of the flares around my "time of the month" is unusual and usually if women notice any difference in their symptoms around their period it's more of a slight increase in symptoms and not a full-blown flare. I was wondering if there is any one else who is experiencing the same kind of severe increase in symptoms/ flare up when they get their period.

I too have flares when I get my period. I have had my colon removed and am now dealing with pouchiits. I get severe menstrual cramps during the first 2 days of my period and take alieve or ibuprophren fornthe pain. I've concluded that the Alieve was making my pouchitis worse so now I only take the ibuprophren in moderation as I've been told it is not good for IBD. You are not alone. I find it very frustration that I get into remission and then along comes my period to exacerbate things. The doctors haven't had much advice about this concern. I wonder if birth control would lessen the symptoms and possibly not trigger flare. However, I'm not eager to take more medications and at this time am not interested in birth control

Hi,

I have Crohn's and have been diagnosed for five years now.   As long as I can remember I would have diarhea during my period, I just figured it was because my muscles were contracting and "cramps" was just affecting my bowels as well.

I was on Humira for 3 years until I had an allergic reaction to it and during that time frame I do'nt recall this happening.  I am now on a holistic journey to heal my crohn's and manage it without drugs (I can't handle all the side effects).  My crohn's is very under control right now, but EVERY month during my period I have significant trouble!  It has gotten better each month (I believe as i heal my body) but it still is frustrating and seems to set me back some each time so I feel your pain.

I have no idea what to tell you about "helping" it.  I feel that its the change in hormones that cause it and there isn't much that you can do about that except go through menopause.  But you are not alone, hang in there!
