Breastfeeding and conscious sedation

Wed, April 29, 2015 6:58 PM

Hi everyone! Have any of you ever had conscious sedation for a colonoscopy while still breast feeding? My baby will be 11 months old at the time, so she can go most of the day without nursing and eat food instead. She has never taken a bottle of breast milk despite lots of coaxing on our part! I know doctors like to clear themselves of liability by advising that you wait 24 hours to breastfeed and just "pump and dump," but I have a feeling it's not necessary to wait that long. I'm an RN, so I'm familiar with the drugs used in the procedure (Fentanyl and Versed), but neither is well-studied in breast feeding. This will be my 5th colonoscopy and I'm having it done before I have rectal prolapse repair surgery in July. What fun! 😩 Thank you for any input you may have!!
