Pregnancy/breastfeeding and medication

Wed, June 17, 2015 9:18 AM

I have been newly diagnosed with Crohn's disease and have started Pentasa and Budesonide but they are not working so the dr will soon be starting me on Humira or Remicade (the decision is up to me). I am 27 and have a 2 year old son and want to have another child. My GI dr has told me to wait to try to get pregnant until the Crohn's is in remission. He also stated that I can continue these meds while pregnant. I wanted to know other's experiences of being on either of these meds while pregnant and any side effects they or the baby had? Also will I be able to breastfeed while taking the medication? Thanks

I think pregnancy and medication is a very personal matter.

With my two pregnancy's, my first I was on 6-mp and ended up very ill from the medication and delivering 9 weeks premature.

My second pregnancy I didn't wait until I was in 100% remission and ended up on prednisone for 24 weeks. After I delivered my second child I ended up in the hospital for a significant amount of time and continued to breastfeed throughout. I always consulted with the hospitals lactation consultants and looked up all medications with them before taking them. I opted to have an upper endoscopy during the stay without medication because I was sick of having to take so much. In the end I ended up on Remicade so I could leave the hospital. I continued to breastfeed on Remicade for almost two years. According to studies (at the time-2010) it showed that remicade was "too large" to pass into breastmilk. Just to be safe we did not give any live vaccines during the first year per our pediatricians recommendation. At 1 yr they tested my son to see if he had any medication in his system before giving the MMR vaccine and he had no detectable levels.

Hope this helps.
