Breastfeeding and medication

Wed, July 29, 2015 3:20 AM

Hello. I was recently diagnosed with UC two weeks after the birth of my baby boy. I fell ill and was hospitalized having to abruptly stop breastfeeding. The team of doctors who treated me discouraged me from continuing to breastfeed due to the medication that I was given. I am currently on Lialda and Prednisone. I'm wondering if any mommies out there have continued to breastfeed while on this medication. I've read the articles on here and both medications appear to safe. I have been in contact with lactation consultants as well. I've been feeling uneasy about the situation and would love to hear from other nursing mommies. Thanks for your feedback!

Betty - Breastfeeding is always best, always! My GI dr gave me the info. Colitis is an autoimmune disease and one of the biggest benefits of breast-feeding is giving your baby antibodies to fight off autoimmune disease is later in life. Good luck and congrats!

60%!!!  Please direct me to any info that has this stat. I'd love to read it. I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have contemplated breast feeding while on Remicade. I need to know if benefits outweigh risks. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

NURSE NURSE NURSE!!!!

My son is four years old and he nursed for twenty months my daughter nursed for 19 months. Both my children nursed while I took prednisone and Lialda. No negative side effects happened at all.

I just kept telling myself that nursing for one year reduces the chances of my babies getting this disease by 60%.

Good luck!

I am not a nursing mother, but I work as a Nutrition Manager at a wic office where I would counsel people on healthy nutrition for infants, children and adults. Prednisone is safe while breastfeeding. There's only minimal amounts that are excreted into the milk. Lialda is also safe, but if you notice any difference in bowel movements from your baby like watery diarrhea. I would consult your physician to change your medication or stop breastfeeding.
